Tips to maximize cutting effective
When speaking of cutting among abrasive wheel, we refer to the wheels in 0.035” to 1/8 inch thickness and the 2” to 14 inch diameter. But,today I am going to narrow down the range to the Slim cutting with angle grinder, also called grinder disc, which normally need practicing operator to handle.No one wish to see the inferior performance and low effective when in operation since ignorance and inappropriate measures. Here are some faces you need to consider to Maximize Cutting effective:
Before cutting : Choose the right Wheel :The right cut off wheel should be depend on the material of workpiece being cut: If a resin cutting disc does not match the workpiece, the abnormal wear; overheat and Lack of sharpness will occur causing the damage of wheel and also safety problems. There are some main categories of workpiece material : Metal ; Stainless steel (Inox); Aluminium; Stone. While, Metal should be divided into: A: ferrous metals like Steel, construction steel, unalloyed steel, etc in lower hardness and tempered steel steel with higher hardness.B: other non-ferrous metals.Each wheel should be specialized for each kind of material.You may can see the wheels for it’s application.Besides, we also should notice that where the workpiece used in, normal referring to construction;home; Fabricate & welding; Industrial & manufacturing,since that will decide what quality level of wheel we should use in case of any waste or shortage.
The right shape of cut off wheel is also help to improve in different cutting situations: There are two shapes most commonly found: T1/T41 cutting wheels has a flat profile and a larger cutting surface, allowing the operator to complete more cuts per wheel. It usually allow for deep cuts in general and enough operation space,while T42/T27 wheels come with a depressed center provides additional clearance with the tool, but it reduces the amount of cuts especially with wheels in 4 1/2 inches or smaller in diameter. T42/T27 cutting wheel are more suit for flush and rip cutting.When there is some type of interference and the wheel needs to be raised up from the base of the grinder.When the operator is cutting thicker material or need cut too deeply into the workpiece, we would better choose T1/T41,such some solid round bar in open space.In general use T41/T1 type would be more used.
Choose the right wheel thickness: Thinner wheels remove less material during a cut, it will be smoother and faster in cutting, what’s more the surface of the workpiece would be neater, while thicker wheels will generally can last longer and perform better on thicker materials.(larger diameter), but it will causing more heat in the process. If you need quick cut and cutting sheet metal or thinner-gauge material, then choose the thinnest as you can. like 0.03 inch and 0.04 inch.If you need longer cuts, you may need thicker one like 0.045 inch and 0.065 inch.The best one is to make balance on cuts and speed from the wheel Material quality not just from thickness.
While cutting:Backing and forth motion needed through the cut: If we just rightly use single and straight downward force, that will let our abrasive grain duller, so, It is recommended to use a sliding or rocking motion in the direction of the cut moving the wheel into and through the workpiece rather than straight down. We should let the Abrasive cutting wheel to pull itself through the workpiece,which can minimizes friction and resistance and can helps extend the life of the wheel.
No need to push too hard: If you push too hard that will bring much more pressure and heat. These are the biggest enemies for abrasive grain. It is easily to think that pushing on wheel will make it perform better, but, push will cause heat and wear which damage wheel. Increased friction will shorten wheel life. It is advise to cutting in nature force to let the wheel do as much of cutting possible.
Starting cut from the right angle: The Slim cutting wheel should be used at a 90-degree angle perpendicular to the work surface.An improper angle can cause tight binding.The Thinner the wheel is, the more critical it is need to be.Thicker wheels are more tolerant. Operators should stand a position where he can see the wheel cutting line.Alway start cutting from the spot that with lease resistance.
Above all, no matter what kind of abrasive cut off wheels an operator selects, understanding what the wheel is designed to be used and following some best cutting practices can help protects operator’ safety and product life, as well as maximize cutting effective .
